Read Book 4, chaps. 4-13 of Augustine's Confessions. Here Augustine describes the death of his close friend, the events leading up to it, and his grief afterwards. Along the way, he has many things to say about genuine friendship as he now sees it and, in general, about attachments to created beings. Your job is to compare what Augustine says about friendship with Aristotle's treatment of friendship in the Nicomachean Ethics. Look for both similarities and differences. (This is a rather open-ended topic; so be careful to structure the paper carefully.) |
